Critically acclaimed author Cammie McGovern presents a heartwarming and humorous middle grade novel about the remarkable bond that forms between an aspiring service dog and an autistic boy in need of a friend. “Joyful, inspiring, and completely winning, Chester and Gus is unforgettable,” proclaimed Katherine Applegate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Newbery Medal winner The One and Only Ivan.
Chester has always wanted to become a service dog. When he fails his certification test, though, it seems like that dream will never come true—until a family adopts him. They want him to be a companion for their ten-year-old son, Gus, who has autism. But Gus acts so differently than anyone Chester has ever met. He never wants to pet Chester, and sometimes he doesn’t even want Chester in the room. Chester’s not sure how to help Gus since this isn’t exactly the job he trained for—but he’s determined to figure it out. Because after all, Gus is now his person.
In the spirit of beloved classics like Because of Winn-Dixie, Shiloh, and Old Yeller, Cammie McGovern’s heartfelt novel—told from Chester’s point of view—explores the extraordinary friendship between a child and a dog with a poignant and modern twist.

Cammie McGovern has done it again in this latest young adult book with a very unusual narrator, namely a dog who has failed in his training program to become a companion dog because of his oversensitivity to noise. He bonds with a severely autistic boy and finally manages to establish himself as a suitable companion for him. Though McGovern's work features autistic characters prominently, the boy here is probably the lowest-functioning of them all; this makes his journey towards connection with the boy all the more dramatic and interesting. Though the dog narrates the story throughout, you get a strong sense of how the boy too is changing in words that he cannot express. Highly recommended.Tags : Chester and Gus [Cammie McGovern] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Heartwarming story which helps children understand autism and relationships.
An awesome story about a dog who can communicate with his thoughts to his young austic owner. The book shows us the struggles the pair endures and the triumph of the growth of their relationship. It was a great read-aloud for my second grade class!
I like to read a chapter or two before going to sleep, usually by eleven. Last night I started this book and read until three a.m.!
I personally do not have much experience with autism but I love dogs and believe in the unspeakable bond and connection they have with their humans. Just a charming, uplifting and at times laugh-out-loud funny book!
This was a wonderful story about a young boy and his relationship with his therapy dog. A rare glimpse into the life of a therapy dog, this also provided insight to the challenges faced by families with a child who is "wired differently" and the difficulties they face in connecting with their loved one.
A "must read" for anyone with a love of animals and a heart for those that struggle, Chester and Gus is one that will be read over and over in our home.
Outstanding read. My fifth grader devoured this in a few sittings while on vacation, and I read this aloud to my 6-year-old, who loved it equally as much, as did I. A perfect book for dog and animal lovers alike, this will keep ages 6-99 entertained. I'm grateful for this book, which has sparked many conversations with my daughters about autism spectrum disorder, service dogs, and children with special needs. Fabulous book for the entire family.
Chester & Gus was one of my favorite books of 2017! Several of my students read it and agreed. An autistic boy and his servicedog learn to work together and build trust through their companionship. The relationship grows and the two are inseparable. I highly recommend this book to those who love dog stories and books with characters with disabilities. So good!
